Georgia Tech vs Boston College: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
Coming off of a bye week, Georgia Tech followed their win over Miami with a disappointing loss to Boston College, a loss in which quarterback Haynes King threw three interceptions and Georgia Tech allowed Boston College to gain nearly 600 yards of offense.
While you could have said the same thing after the loss to Bowling Green, this feels like the loss that will kill Georgia Tech's hopes of making a bowl game. Anything can happen in college football, but Georgia Tech will now have to win three out of five against North Carolina, UVA, Clemson, Syracuse, and Georgia. That is a tough uphill battle for Brent Key's team.
Let's break down the good, the bad, and the ugly from today's loss to Boston College.
The Good
- Haynes King ran for 150 yards on 10 carries, including the 71-yard touchdown. While it was a terrible day for King throwing the football, he was able to pick up yards on the ground today.
- The running game as a whole bounced back from some tough games and totaled 248 yards on 35 carries, averaging over seven yards per carry
- Aidan Birr hit a 46-yard field goal. The field goal kicking had its share of ups and downs earlier this season, but Birr has done a nice job of kicking the ball lately.
- Ahmari Harvey made a great interception in the end zone on a deep throw by Thomas Castellanos.
The Bad
- A bowl game is likely out the window. This team has shown a propensity for pulling upsets, but I don't think this team is going to be able to make the postseason after today.
- Brent Key had some bad clock management today. There was 12 minutes left in the game and Georgia Tech had already used two timeouts and in one instance, he called a timeout on fourth down just to decide to punt.
- In some instances today, Key said that they had only 10 players on the field. That is just unacceptable at any point.
- Georgia Tech did not have a sack today and could not create pressure to make Castellanos uncomfortable
- Five penalties for Georgia Tech today
- Georgia Tech was 3-11 on third down today
Turnovers and Fourth Quarter Collapse Doom Georgia Tech In Loss to Boston College.
The Ugly
- A loss is always ugly
- Boston College outscored Georgia Tech 21-0 in the fourth quarter
- Boston College racked up 563 yards of offense, gaining 7.8 yards per play
- The Yellow Jackets defense gave up 308 yards rushing, allowing Boston College to average over seven yards per carry
- The passing game was ugly in pretty much every aspect today. King was 14-32 for 204 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown.
- Birr had a missed extra point
- Georgia Tech and Brent Key once again lost as a favorite. Key has done a great job of getting his team ready to play when they are big underdogs, but they are 1-4 when they have been favored with him as the head coach.
- Georgia Tech is now 1-2 at home
- Christian Leary had a big drop today that would have likely gone for a touchdown
- Boston College had a 13% explosive play rate, which is really high for a single game.
- Georgia Tech still can't put together consecutive wins this season
- The defense, which looked improved in areas against Miami after Kevin Sherrer took over as the defensive coordinator, looked out of sorts and just undisciplined in so many ways today. Andrew Thacker was probably not the only problem.
Georgia Tech is back in action next week against No. 10 North Carolina. The game is at home.
