No Georgia Tech in ESPN's preseason bowl projections
ESPN released their preseason bowl projections over the weekend as the college football season gets underway for every program this weekend. It might not be a surprise to many, but Georgia Tech was not included in this version of their bowl projections.
Georgia Tech has not made a bowl game since the 2018 season but came close last year after Brent Key took over the program on an interim basis and he went 4-4 with three wins over teams that finished with nine wins. The Yellow Jackets roster has undergone change this offseason, as has the coaching staff, but this is a program that is trying to get back to winning seasons.
The projected win total for Georgia Tech has been at 4.5 on most sportsbooks. One of the reasons for the low optimism nationally is the schedule that Georgia Tech plays. The Yellow Jackets play four teams that are starting the season ranked (Georgia, Clemson, North Carolina, and Ole Miss) as well as Louisville in the opener, Miami, and Wake Forest. Georgia Tech plays a tough schedule annually and this is no exception.
Not only is the projected win total low for Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets were picked to finish 12th by the media at the ACC kickoff in July. When asked about that, here is what Key had to say:
"I could care less, they could less, I could care less. Games are played on the field and I know it is that time of year when it is exciting to see the rankings and see those things and have a lot of good talking points for the next three or four weeks and that is what makes college football a passion and that is what it is, its the passion for the people that cover it, it is a passion for you guys, it's what yall do and helps you put information together but it means nothing to me. If I was not coaching I would be right there with you guys, reading them all and making the predictions, but not for us. Those external things have zero factor on how we come out and practice everyday."
Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Georgia Tech were the only ACC teams not projected to make a bowl game.
Georgia Tech is going to be a program that plays with a chip on their shoulder again this year as they try to make it back to the postseason.
The Yellow Jackets open the 2023 season against Louisville on Friday at 7:30 on ESPN.
