Report: Georgia Tech's Jason Semore Hired By Marshall As Defensive Coordinator
Update (6:32)
247Sports Brandon Marcello is reporting that Semore is going to be the next defensive coordinator for Marshall.
Update (5:38 P.M.)
Semore might not be going anywhere after all.
According to Kelly Quinlan from JacketsOnline, Semore has not accepted the defensive coordinator position but will interview with Marshall this week and is the front-runner.
Georgia Tech is going to be losing one of its top defensive coaches.
Jason Semore, who spent last season coaching linebackers and was set to be the nickels/safeties coach as well as special teams coordinator, is leaving to be the defensive coordinator at Marshall. Marshall has been searching for a new defensive coordinator since Lance Guidry left, first for Tulane and then for Miami and they are hiring one of the best up-and-coming defensive coaches in the sport.
Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports first reported the news this evening.
Semore returned to Georgia Tech for the 2022 season as the linebackers coach and he helped get Charlie Thomas and Ace Eley to be one of the best pairs of linebackers in the ACC. Both Eley and Thomas were named second-team All-ACC by the AP after this season. Eley finished the season with 118 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and four forced fumbles. Thomas tallied 112 tackles, two sacks, two pass deflections, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
As a result of this coaching job, Semore was nominated for FootballScoop's linebackers coach of the year. The difference in how FootballScoop hands out should be noted. Instead of writers or members of the media voting on the awards, FootballScoop lets fellow coaches decide who gets to be nominated and win the awards. This shows that Semore's job this year was recognized by his peers in the coaching profession and it is well deserved.
Semore also did a good job of helping Georgia Tech's special teams unit. He took over the title of special teams coordinator after the firing of Geoff Collins and while the unit still had its hiccups, it was improved from the first four games of the season.
It is going to be interesting to see how Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key replaces Semore on the staff. Stay tuned for updates.
