What Positions Could Georgia Tech Target In The Transfer Portal?

Georgia Tech already has one commitment from the second portal window

The second transfer portal window has been open since the middle of the month and it closes on April 30th. It is a short window for teams to try and fill needs and solidify their roster ahead of the summer and fall camp.

Georgia Tech and its staff have made one addition through the portal already with Princeton offensive lineman Connor Scaglione. Scaglione is a starter from Princeton and could compete for playing time or be an experienced backup. Since he was not able to play in the spring game, I am interested to see how he fits in with the team leading into the fall.

So what other positions could Georgia Tech target?

Haynes King at spring game
Georgia Tech appears set at the quarterback position after the spring / Georgia Tech Athletics

The Yellow Jackets appear to be fine at quarterback heading into the fall. Haynes King, Zach Pyron, and Zach Gibson all had good moments in the spring game and I think it will be either Pyron or King as the starter this fall. Don't look for another quarterback to join the team.

Running back is another spot I think this team is fine at heading into the fall. Dontae Smith, Trey Cooley, Jamie Felix, true freshman Evan Dickens, and Daylon Gordon all flashed during the spring game and while I don't think there is a superstar in this backfield right now, they all could be solid options and provide depth

Wide receiver is an interesting position. Malik Rutherford shined in the spring game, as did Avery Boyd, D.J Moore, and Christian Leary, but I think the staff would take the right player if he became available. As far as the offense goes, I think receiver is the most likely position there could be a portal addition. Don't forget that Texas A&M transfer Chase Lane will arrive in the summer.

Tight end appears set. Dylan Leonard, Luke Benson, Brett Seither, Billy Ward, and Jackson Long will be the guys this team relies on. Ben Postman has entered the portal already

The offensive line has seen one addition already (Scaglione), however, this group was solid in the spring game and returns all of its starters from a year ago and the rest of the freshmen from the 2023 class will be arriving later on in the summer to help provide depth. Never rule anything out, but this might be the o-line group Brent Key and Geep Wade go into the season with.

On the defensive line, edge rusher could be a position where the Yellow Jackets could look to add another player. They have offered USF's Eddie Kelly already and more offers could be on the way. It was hard to get a read on this group during the spring because of how vanilla the defense as a whole played, but it was a question coming in.

Linebacker has already seen three transfers (Braelen Oliver, Andre White Jr, and Austin Dean) come in during the first transfer portal window and they could add another. Khatavian Franks entered the portal last week.

The secondary appears to be set. Safety is a strength on this team with LaMiles Brooks, Jaylon King, and Clayton Powell-Lee and cornerback is going to be an ongoing competition into the fall. Kenan Johnson, Kenyatta Watson, and Ahmari Harvey.

Overall, you can never rule any position out if the right player becomes available that can upgrade your roster. I think wide receiver and defensive line are the most likely positions that could see new additions, but neither is definite. Let's see what Key and the rest of the staff want to do ahead of the portal closing.
