Guard Deivon Smith Opts For Transfer Portal

A key piece in Tech's rotation decides to transfer from the program.

Amid last season's disappointments, one of the highlights was the play of junior guard Deivon Smith.

From a statistical perspective, per ESPN, he led the team in assists with 3.7. Even though he only started 13 games (four against ACC teams), he ranked second in the conference with 5.6 rebound per game and third in assist-turnover ratio (2.78-to-1). Given that he is a smaller guard at 6'1 and 176 lbs, it was incredibly impressive for him to be as prolific of a rebounder as he was last year.

Arriving to Tech in 2021 from Mississippi State, Smith will now be looking for a new home once again as he announced his decision to transfer today. The decision was confirmed by Kelly Quinlan of Rivals.com.

This is a really unfortunate loss for the Jackets. Even though new addition Kowacie Reeves hopefully adds a big spark on offense, Smith played well as a connecting piece. His playmaking ability, ball security and rebounding skill will be missed by the Jackets in 2023, as he did a lot of the little things that add up to winning.

Furthermore, he brought energy as a two-way player that could hold up on defense. One of the biggest examples of that was the win against Georgia, where Smith taking a charge in the closing seconds of the game proved critical to the victory.

It's not hard to see how he could have been useful to the team and culture new coach Damon Stoudamire is building.

Wishing Deivon the best!
