VCU Transfer Jalen DeLoach Includes Indiana in Top Six
Jalen DeLoach announced his top six schools on Tuesday, including Florida State, San Diego State, VCU, Miami (FL), Indiana and Penn State.
DeLoach is a 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward who played his first two seasons at VCU. He started 32 games for VCU as a sophomore in 2022-23, averaging 9.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. He has a career 56.9 field goal percentage and has not attempted a 3-point shot across two seasons.
VCU went 27-8 overall this year, including a 15-3 record to win the Atlantic-10 Conference. The Rams earned a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost 63-51 to No. 5 seed Saint Mary's in the Round of 64. DeLoach fouled out with one point and two rebounds in this game, but he finished the season as VCU's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer per game.
Prior to VCU, DeLoach was a three-star recruit out of The Skill Factory in Atlanta, Ga., and his hometown is Savannah, Ga.
DeLoach is still considering continuing his career at VCU under new coach Ryan Odom, but DeLoach entered the transfer portal after coach Mike Rhoades left VCU. Rhoades replaces Micah Shrewsberry, now Notre Dame's coach, as Penn State's coach, and DeLoach is also considering following Rhoades to Penn State.
Two of his other options, San Diego State and Miami, went to the Final Four this season, while Florida State went 9-23 overall and finished 12th in the ACC.
DeLoach has a visit to Indiana scheduled for April 14, and he shared his thoughts on a potential future in Bloomington.
“Coach Woodson is a great coach and Indiana is the Mecca of basketball," DeLoach told Dushawn London of 247Sports. "With coach Woodson coaching in the NBA, I know he knows what it takes to get to the next level.”
Indiana has been busy in the transfer portal this offseason, already adding 6-foot-9 big man Payton Sparks from Ball State. If point guard Xavier Johnson's medical hardship waiver is approved, Indiana will still have four available scholarships, as it currently stands, due to the departure of Trayce Jackson-Davis, Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Tamar Bates, Jordan Geronimo and Logan Duncomb.
