Buckeyes QB Devin Brown Throws First Career TD To WR Carnell Tate
While Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord has stolen the day with a three-touchdown performance, head coach Ryan Day turned to Devin Brown most of the second half against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
Following linebacker Steele Chambers' first interception of the season, Brown dropped back and lofted a sky-high pass to wide receiver Carnell Tate for a 28-yard touchdown. The scores were the first in both Brown and Tate's careers to give Ohio State a 56-10 lead against Western Kentucky to begin the fourth quarter.
Brown was in a quarterback battle with McCord where the two split series in the first two games against the Indiana Hoosiers and Youngstown State Penguins, respectively. In a sluggish game against the Hoosiers, he played limited snaps and completed 1-of-3 passes for -1 yard.
He got a little more of a fair shake against the Penguins and was 7-for-13 for 101 yards. Brown is currently 3-for-3 for 40 yards, one touchdown and an interception after a tipped pass at the line of scrimmage landed in the arms of defensive lineman Hosea Wheeler.
Tate took spring and summer camp by storm, proving to be one of the best freshmen in the class of 2023.
He's been the No. 5 wide receiver on the Buckeyes' depth chart in the first two games of the season behind Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Julian Fleming and Xavier Johnson.
Tate has had one reception in each of the first two games against Indiana and Youngstown State, respectively, for 15 and 20 yards, respectively.
