Michigan DB Mike Sainristil's Flag Plant Not Meant 'To Disrespect Ohio State'

The Ohio State Buckeyes have lost back-to-back games against the Michigan Wolverines since 1999-2000.

Last season ended about as badly as possible for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Not only did Ohio State miss out on a national championship berth by one point, but it also lost to Michigan at home. To put the cherry on top of losing at Ohio Stadium for the first time since 2000, Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil planted a Block "M" flag on the 50-yard line of the 'Shoe.

Sainristil said it was a "spur-of-the-moment" idea.

"It wasn't anything to disrespect Ohio State or anything like that," Sainristil said at Big Ten Media Days Thursday. "It was just, like I said, happy to have went down there and did what we did with my teammates, and it just happened."

Ohio State led the Wolverines 20-17 at halftime, but had a collapse on both sides of the ball, getting outscored 28-3 and out-gained 316-177.

The Block "M" flag Sainristil planted is now displayed in Schembechler Hall's Towsley Museum on a display titled "The Game."

Though Sainristil will have completed his college football career by the time the Wolverines come to Columbus in 2024, he's unsure if he'd plant the flag again if given the opportunity to do so.

"It was just one of those things that happened in the moment," Sainristil said. "I can't say that would I do it again? I don't know. Just one of those things, I was excited. I was happy, and it just happened."
