Rebels Kemp Alderman Awarded 2023 Ferris Trophy
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels baseball team underachieved this spring, but outfielder Kemp Alderman certainly did not. The Rebels announced on Monday that Alderman was named the recipient of the 2023 Ferris Trophy, which is given annually to the top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi. The trophy was named after former Ole Miss great Dave ‘Boo’ Ferriss.
Alderman was named a finalist for the award on May 12 along with Mississippi State Bulldogs infielder Hunter Hines, Jackson State Tigers infielder Slade Wilks, and Southern Miss Golden Eagles pitcher Tanner Hall and outfielder Slade Wilks. Hall received the honors in 2022 over former Ole Miss first baseman Tim Elko and nearly became the first-ever double recipient of the award.
Alderman is the first Rebel to win the Ferris Award since outfielder Auston Bousfield in 2014. The Decatur, Miss., native led Ole Miss in batting average (.376), OPS (1.149), hits (80), home runs (19), runs batted in (61), total bases (151), slugging percentage (.706), and on-base percentage (.440) in 2023. In the Southeastern Conference, the junior outfielder finished seventh in batting average, fourth in hits, eighth in slugging percentage, tied for seventh in runs batted in, fourth in total bases, and tied for ninth in home runs.
Alderman is expected to be selected during the 2023 MLB Draft in July and will have the option to sign with the team that takes him. Should Alderman decide to begin his professional journey, he will be remembered by fans for his towering 480-foot home run that hit the Swayze Field scoreboard, and closing out the Alcorn State Braves on the mound in April.
