Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin Discusses 'Major Issues' Stemming From 'Free Agency' in Transfer Portal

Just because Lane Kiffin's roster was built by the NCAA Transfer Portal does not mean the Ole Miss coach is in favor of how it is currently operating.

OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Rebels coach Lane Kiffin took to the podium Thursday morning to address reporters at the 2023 SEC Media Days and gave his two cents on how the NCAA Transfer Portal has been utilized since the introduction of the NIL policy in 2021.

Kiffin is by all means a proponent of players getting paid but has been vocal many times in the past about the issues that could arise due to a lack of regulation in the portal.

"It's phenomenal that players get a chance to get paid," Kiffin told reporters. "I do think, which I've stood up here and said before when [NIL] first happened, that there's going to be some major issues and we're creating free agency with the portal."

Kiffin continued about how the portal now allows players to switch teams year after year, which has created immense roster changes around college football.

"I don't think there are any other sports at any level that are like this, that really, you every year, can opt into free agency," Kiffin said. "Really, twice a year."

"It's created a lot of issues and roster changes," Kiffin said. "I'm not complaining about it because we take advantage of free agency, but at the same time, I don't think that's really good for college football. These massive overhauls of rosters every year, really, is not in the best interest of the sport."

Kiffin's own roster has been revamped by the influx of talent in the portal the last two offseasons, but that does not mean he believes it is good for college football. The Rebels' coach knows there is not much he can do until changes are made.

"There's your state of the union of what all coaches are dealing with around the country," Kiffin said. "A poor system that isn't getting any better is now going to get worse... It is what it is. We'll deal with it like we do with everything else. But somehow, it's got to get fixed because there's no system around it."
