Penn State's Theo Johnson Charged With Assault After Alleged Frat Fight

Johnson, a tight end for the Lions, faces two misdemeanor charges stemming from a February fraternity incident.

Penn State tight end Theo Johnson is charged with a misdemeanor count of simple assault stemming from an alleged incident at a fraternity in February.

State College Police charged Johnson on Wednesday with assault and criminal mischief, according to court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 24.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, obtained by the Centre Daily Times, surveillance video at the fraternity allegedly showed Johnson punching another person following an argument. Police said that Johnson was asked to leave the fraternity because he was not wearing a wristband required for the party it was holding. The person Johnson allegedly punched was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center and diagnosed with a concussion, police said.

"We are aware of the charges against Theo Johnson. These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed. We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter," Penn State Athletics said in a statement.

Johnson, a junior, started nine games at tight end for Penn State last season. He ranked fourth on the team in receptions with 20 and caught four touchdown passes. Johnson did not play in the Blue-White spring game in April.
