PITTSBURGH -- Carlton "Bub" Carrington took his place in Pitt Panthers history in record time, needing just one game to record his first career triple-double, only the fifth in school history.

Carrington's play looked impressive enough live and on the court, but when compared to some of the other great players and games that live in Pitt's record books, it becomes even more impressive. Take a stroll down memory lane so you can appreciate what's happening in the present at the Petersen Events Center.

Race Against the Clock
Until Carrington ran roughshod over A&T's Aggies, Ricardo Greer stood alone as the sole Pitt freshman to ever record a triple-double in a game. Compare his raw numbers to Carrington's and Greer's magical night in the opening round of the 1998 Big East Tournament looks better. Greer scored 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, a five-point improvement on Carrington's night.

But here's the catch - Greer's historic stuffing of the box score came in a double-overtime loss. In that game, Greer played 20 more minutes, took nine more field goal attempts, shot them at a rate 16% worse, went to the free throw line four more times and turned the ball over twice as much as Carrington did in his own triple-double performance against North Carolina A&T.

This is not meant to be any kind of knock against Greer and his own landmark night, which came in a bigger spot against a better opponent at a different time in the sport's evolution when pace was slower and possessions more limited. But what Carrington did from an efficiency standpoint was remarkable enough, and he did it in his collegiate debut. Even Greer had 26 games to warm up.

Unparalleled Efficiency
Watching Carrington go about his business against North Carolina A&T, it never looked like he was forcing anything (until his final minutes in the game, when he was indeed hunting that one last assist he needed). Not effortless, but everything came within the flow of the game and what resulted was efficiency the likes of which really hasn't been seen in the limited history of Pitt triple-doubles

Keith Starr and Darelle Porter also own a place in Pitt history as the only two other players to record a triple-double in program history. But Carrington has them both beat. He scored more than Starr did in his pair of triple-double games (13 and 17 points) while surpassing both his rebounding totals (11 twice) and matching one assist total and falling one pass short of his other.

Starr's box scores from his triple-double games are not on record, but Greer, Porter and Carrington all have shooting numbers readily available and among the last three triple-double games in Pitt history, Carrington is the only player to shoot better than 50% from the floor and commit fewer than three turnovers while doing so.

Leaving His Mark in Record Time
Carrington's historic night will leave his name all over Pitt record books for years to come because each part of his triple-double will touch a different chapter of Panthers basketball history.

His 10 assists are tied for the sixth-most by a freshman in a single game, tied with Xavier Johnson, Marcus Carr, Sean Miller, Porter and Greer. His 12 rebounds tied Christ Taft for the second-most in a freshman debut, 18 points is the second-best freshman debut scoring output in Pitt history and 10 assists tied Miller for the most in a first-year's first game.

Carrington is also one of just 21 Pitt freshmen to start their first collegiate game. Five have done so since Capel became the head coach and four have done it while handling the demands of playing point guard.

It is early - Carrington's Pitt career is just 29 minutes of game time old, but he's already claimed a place in school records that can never be taken away.
