PITTSBURGH -- This week's NFL roster cut deadline brought bad news for former Pitt Panthers safety Erick Hallett, who was one of many cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars as they trimmed the roster down to 53 players.

But Hallett, who started for the Panthers for all of the past two seasons before being selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, will stick around in Jacksonville after signing a practice squad deal with the team just a day after he was released.

The Jaguars had been impressed with Hallett during training camp. With starting corner Tyson Campbell sidelined for much of training camp, defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell moved the former safety all over the field.

"He's a guy that's a multiple player - he can play safety, nickel, he can play outside a little," Caldwell said. "So he's a guy that has flexibility and we're ready to use all his skills, whether it's playing safety or playing the nickel."
