Report: Pitt Opponent Loses Head Coach
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' path through the ACC over the foreseeable future likely just got a little bit easier as of this weekend.
Duke, who just beat the Panthers by a final score of 30-19 at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina in the regular season finale, are expected to lose their head coach, Mike Elko this offseason as Texas A&M targets him as their next head coach, according to multiple reports from ESPN's Pete Thamel, The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach and others.
The Aggies went through a confusing saga in the wake of their dismissal of Jimbo Fisher. In addition to having to shell out $76 million as a part of Fisher's buyout, A&M reportedly had to deal with an internal revolt from
Elko delivered Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi his first-ever loss to the Blue Devils since arriving in Pittsburgh this past weekend. Narduzzi had run up a 6-0 record against former Duke head coach David Cutcliffe but fell to 1-1 against Elko this weekend.
Elko led the Blue Devils to nine wins in 2022, their most since 2014, when they finished 9-4 under Cutcliffe. Duke's high ranking of No. 16 in the AP poll achieved this season was the program's highest since 1994.
The Panthers are scheduled play Duke just twice over the next seven seasons but the progress of a rising program has been stunted with Elko's exit.
