PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers voted and made their selections known. Now they have three captains for the 2023 season.

The Panthers will be led this season by some new and old faces, with linebacker Shayne Simon, offensive lineman Matt Goncalves and defensive tackle David Green each earning captain's honors for the first time in their careers.

Goncalves, a first-team selection, has emerged as one of the Panthers' best offensive linemen after a strong 2022 campaign in which he helped fill in for Carter Warren, a starter and team captain who went down with a knee injury midway through the season. He projects as a starter at one of the tackle spots this coming season.

Green, also a Western Pennsylvania native, has emerged as one of the most vocal leaders. After appearing in all 13 games and starting seven while amassing 22 stops, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defense, he figures to be one of the most crucial parts of the Panthers' defensive line this season.

Simon arrived as a transfer from Notre Dame last spring and appeared in all 13 games, starting 12 as an outside linebacker in his first season at Pitt. He's moving inside and taking on a larger leadership role with SirVocea Dennis having moved on to the NFL. Simon compiled 46 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, six pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery last season.
