Mustangs Ride Four-Game Win Streak Into Tulane
NEW ORLEANS, La. — SMU defeated Tulane by four points less than a week ago that sparked the Mustangs’ current four-game win streak. They’ll look to extend that streak to five Thursday night at Tulane (13-10, 4-7 AAC).
The Mustangs (17-7, 8-3 AAC) followed the Tulane with a 72-69 win against UAB and then won big at Rice 95-69. Most recently, SMU defeated North Texas in another close game, 71-68.
“(North Texas) outplayed us for a majority of the game,” SMU coach Rob Lanier said in his post-game press conference Sunday. “We talked a lot in recent weeks about trying to find a way to win in different kinds of games. Close games, games when your back is against the wall and tonight was one of those opportunities where nothing was working. And we found a way.”
SMU Has the Man It Needs
The Green Wave have gone 1-1 since their loss to SMU. They defeated Temple in overtime, 92-80 and lost to Memphis, 90-78.
In the previous meeting between SMU and Tulane, the Mustangs had five players reach double-digit points, a trend that has been successful for the Mustangs all season. SMU is 10-0 this season when at least four players score 10 or more points.
In addition to SMU extending its win streak to a season-best five games, Thursday night’s game at Tulane could also see Zhuric Phelps and Samuell Williamson surpass the 1,000 point milestone for their collegiate careers. Phelps has 993, all of which were scored for SMU, and Williamson has 990.
Phelps was also named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll this week. He averaged 12 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2 steals in a pair of wins last week to earn his second AAC Weekly Honor this season.
The game will tip-off at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. Fans in Dallas can listen on KAAM-AM 770.
