Lamont Paris Discusses How Gamecocks Got Back To The Basics After Loss To LSU
Lamont Paris spoke briefly in the post-game press conference after what he called "one of our better wins of the season" in South Carolina's 72-59 victory over Ole Miss. Coach Paris contributed much of yesterday's success to the effort on the defensive side of the ball. They made it a point of emphasis to be intentional in trying to outperform the first half defensively, focusing more on outperforming that first half rather than seeing how fast the clock would run.
According to Lamont, Effort and determination were a major reason for the Gamecocks' defensive success, especially in regards to them slowed down a solid three-point shooting team in the Rebels. That performance tied back to his team getting back to the basics over their bye week:
"You always write up the things [on your board] you think are important; sometimes you feel like you're writing the same stuff up there, and oftentimes you are. You tweak it from one game to the next, and it's all these detailed things about the scouting report," Paris explained. "There was not much of that on today's board, it was all the basic, basic, basic stuff. The basic stuff that has allowed us to have success. We went back to some of that [this week], playing basic rules."
Confidence was important in the outcome of this game for South Carolina after suffering two losses on polar opposite ends of the spectrum: a blowout loss and a blown late lead. Coach Paris stated you don't accidentally trip and fall into the success Ole Miss has achieved this season and thought it was imperative for his squad to come out on the road with all the outside noise and gain that confidence back with this win.
