South Carolina Hosts Former Dayton Forward Mustapha Amzil
Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks are facing a tall task this offseason, needing to fill six roster vacancies created by transferring players and GG Jackson's declaring for the NBA Draft, with Meechie Johnson testing NBA Draft waters as well. There have been rumors of many transfer prospects being in touch with Coach Paris, but today's meeting marks an exciting opportunity as they'll have a talented prospect traversing the Gamecock facilities.
This talented prospect is Finnish Forward Mustapha Amzil, who spent the last three seasons with the Dayton Flyers. During this time, Amzil started in 35 games, playing an average of 25.6 minutes a night, and has shown flashes of athleticism and dominant playmaking ability. It's his consistency, however, that makes him a high-priority target for South Carolina.
What Amzil could bring to the Gamecocks are consistent shooting efficiency and strong rebounding. At 6'9, 224 lbs., Amzil is an enormous body in the paint, averaging 4.7 rebounds in his time with the Flyers. Because three of the four Gamecock transfers were post players, South Carolina basketball can provide an opportunity for increased minutes, a role in which Amzil would shine. With field goal, three-point, and free throw shooting percentages of 44, 35, and 77 percent, respectively, Amzil is a player who could average double-figures in scoring next season with the Gamecocks. With most shooting fouls occurring beneath the basket, Forwards frequently go to the free-throw line, and Amzil's efficient free-throw percentage for his position puts defenders in a Catch-22. If you foul him, he's expected to make both of his shots; if you don't, he's likely to score.
Although Mustapha Amzil has three full seasons of playing experience, he still has two years of eligibility remaining. His skill set and South Carolina's lack of depth at the Forward position match perfectly. If all goes well in Columbia today, Amzil may soon find a new home at the University of South Carolina for the next two years.
