South Carolina's Women's Basketball Team Racks Up Postseason Awards
South Carolina's Women's Basketball team is about to enter their most pivotal stretch of the entire season, the postseason, where every single game from this coming Friday onward will be a win-or-go-home situation for Dawn Staley's squad. The team, however, should be proud of what they've already accomplished up to this point in the season, finishing the regular season undefeated and likely securing the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament.
Now that the regular season has concluded, awards are beginning to be doled out by each of the conferences, and in terms of the SEC, there's a heavy Gamecock flavor. In regards to the SEC Player of The Year Award, Aliyah Boston claimed the award for the second straight year.
Dawn Staley, who defeated coaches the likes of Geno Auriemma, Tara Vanderveer and Kim Mulkey this season, won the SEC Coach of the Year award for the sixth time in her career.
Aliyah Boston's likely successor at the center spot, Kamilla Cardoso, also won an award of her own, claiming the SEC's 6th Woman of the Year Award after averaging 9.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game coming off of the Gamecocks' bench.
Cardoso was also named a second-team All-SEC selection, making her the only Gamecock besides Boston to earn at least two different awards from the conference. In regards to some other awards, Aliyah Boston and Zia Cooke were both named First-Team All Selections, while Brea Beal along with Boston was named to the SEC's All-Defensive team, and Raven Johnson was lone Gamecock freshman to make the SEC's All-Freshman team.
South Carolina's ten overall awards and selections from the SEC paced the entire conference, four more than the LSU Tigers who had six claimed six collective awards and selections of their own.
