Marcellas Dial is set to be the top corner for Carolina in 2023 and is expected to fill the big shoes of now-NFL corners Cam Smith and Darius Rush in the defensive back room. A former junior college defensive back from Georgia Military College, he begins his third year in Columbia; he stands as the latest in an impressive lineage of standout Gamecock cornerbacks. Over the years, he has progressively improved his game and strength through rigorous weight room training and on-field instruction from Torrian Gray. This season, he is expected to step up and take on a more substantial leadership role on the team. Cam Smith and Darrius Rush helped provide consistency in the Gamecocks' secondary, and Dial can feel those shoes this season.

The Gamecocks have watched tremendous corners such as Cam Smith, Darius Rush, and Jaycee Horn blossom in the past couple of seasons. After a successful redshirt junior season, Marcellas Dial is set to add his name to that impressive list.

In the 2022 season, the then-redshirt junior played in all 13 games, starting ten at cornerback. He registered 45 tackles, led the team with three interceptions, and broke up a team-high 12 passes. His defensive prowess was reflected in his 1.2 passes defended per game, ranking him 24th in the country. Notably, he was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after an exceptional performance against Clemson.

With 17 career starts already under his belt, his growth and maturity are undeniable. His dedication in the weight room and on the field is expected to propel him into a leadership role this season—Carolina's secondary promises to be formidable again in 2023, thanks partly to this standout defensive back.
