South Carolina completed their Spring football game on Saturday night with the Black team defeating the Garnet team by a score of 19-17 in an overtime format created at the last minute by the Gamecocks' head coach. The game offered both good and bad plays by both sides of the ball, with no one, in particular, dominating the entire night, something that a coaching staff typically likes to see in a Spring game, a healthy balanced performance.

Coach Beamer was happy regarding the team's fundamentals but noted some issues with dropped passes that needed to be corrected by the receiving core. He also commended the competitive fervor from players like Spencer Rattler, Antwane Wells, Nick Emmanwori, and Juju McDowell, who all wanted to go back in the game late to try and win it for their respective teams.

Jaylen Nichols and Kajuan Banks left the game with injuries, with Shane stating that Banks would be fine moving forward while Nichols needed further evaluation.

In terms of the play in the trenches, Shane pointed to the diverse lineups as a contributing factor to the protection being lackluster at times, along with the fact that the defensive graduate assistants got quite exotic with their play calls, to the point where he had the message conveyed that they needed to "settle down a little bit." On the opposite side of the line of scrimmage, Beamer lauded the play of newcomer Elijah Davis, admitting that the JUCO transfer was probably a little bit out of shape when he arrived on campus but had a solid finish to the Spring slate both on and off the field.

The big takeaway quote from the head coach on Saturday night regarded the composition of the tight end room, a group featured heavily in the Spring game, but not by design, according to coach Beamer. Still, from top to bottom, the third-year head man believes the Gamecocks have upgraded at the position.

"We're better at the tight end position than we were last year. That's not coach speak, we're much better. We're deeper... I'd say that we're better because we have more of them - and all those guys can do multiple things."
