Behind The Film: 2024 Four-Star Early Enrollee & Gamecock WR Mazeo Bennett
We are back in the film room, watching more of the early enrollees who will be with the South Carolina Gamecocks during the Spring. In this edition, I break down Mazeo Bennett, a wide receiver out of South Carolina who could very well impact the team sooner rather than later.
I reached out to Bennett and asked him the same two questions I've asked in this series: What area needs to improve in your game, and what's one aspect of your game that will translate well into college?
When it comes to an area that needs improvement, Bennett stated, "I feel like smoother route transition is always something that can be tweaked to be better." This couldn't be truer; the transition from high school to college shows that creating space and running efficient routes can take receivers a long way. Although Mazeo thinks he could be better in that area, he doesn't lack confidence, nor should he when it comes to the area of his game that will show up early in his college career.
"My ball skills [are my biggest strength]. If it's in the air coming to me, I've got to have it."
What The Films Says
The first thing that jumps out to me in this film is that Mazeo Bennett isn't a "ME" player but can take over a drive or game if needed. He won't hesitate to get outside and block on the edge for his teammates and can turn around the next play and turn a play into something from nothing. His route-running ability is slightly above average, but it's also not yet at the point that will allow Bennett to be one of the better-receiving options.
Bennett could quickly jump into some special teams role at South Carolina due to his shiftiness and superb ability to read the field and cut through an open lane. He will likely see most of his time in the slot at the next level but very well could work outside if needed.
Overall, Mazeo has the potential to finish near the top of the Gamecock record books at the end of his career. His ceiling and potential are that high, but some further development might be needed at the start of his career in order to get him on that path.
