Opponent Film Review: Georgia Offense

South Carolina's football program faces off against the top team in the nation this Saturday; what does the film say about the Bulldogs' offense?

This Saturday night afternoon at 3:30, when the Gamecocks and Bulldogs face off in Athens, you may not see the same Georgia offense. Through two games, new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has averaged 46.5 points per game, and while they’ve had what some may deem as slow starts, they still won convincingly against UT-Martin and Ball State. So what do we know the Bulldogs will try and do against South Carolina?

Variety Of Run Extensions

The Bulldogs came into the season with a hurt running back group and haven’t had a starter play a whole game to this point, primarily because of injury. The only back that’s been fully healthy for Georgia has been freshman back Roderick Robinson. So, you may not see the traditional ground-and-pound attack from a Bobo offense. You’ll likely see bubble screens and tear motions to guys like Dillon Bell and Dominic Lovett. I would almost be shocked if you don’t see Brock Bowers on an end around or reverse of some kind.

Quick Passes

Carson Beck hasn’t had many deep shots called for him this season. There’ve been some sporadic calls, but not with as much frequency as we’re used to seeing. I’m not telling you the deep game for UGA won’t be there because I think that portion of their offensive playbook may be used more this weekend. I’m simply saying you know they’ll get the ball out quickly to their playmakers and allow them to try to make a play.

Brock Bowers

If there’s one constant in this Georgia offense and Bobo offenses in the past, he’ll continue to give the ball to his playmakers. Bowers has only seven touches so far this season for 84 yards, 12 yards per touch, but the film shows a couple of different wrinkles that could be on display this Saturday.

The Gamecocks defense will have to force Georgia to be one-dimensional. If they can do that, they can have a chance. To do so, they’ll need to be able to stop the run without adding to the box and, thus, put more pressure on a quarterback who’s only starting his third career college game on Saturday and his first game against a recognizable opponent.
