One of the most significant weaknesses for the Gamecocks heading into the 2023 season is the lack of depth on the defensive line, as the Gamecocks lost several defensive linemen to the NFL Draft and the transfer portal. The departure of multiple talented defensive linemen, including Jordan Burch, Zacch Pickens, and Gilber Edmond, has made the position a top priority for the Gamecocks in the transfer portal.

While South Carolina has been talking with multiple defensive linemen in the transfer portal, one player they've gained notable traction with recently is Maryland lineman Tank Booker. Booker has garnered attention from a bevy of Power Five programs since his entrance into the transfer portal, especially from the Big Ten and SEC. On Friday morning, Booker took the next step in his recruitment by narrowing his list down to five schools, with the Gamecocks making the cut.

Though the former three-star's playing time has been inconsistent through his past four years, the 6-4 lineman could offer a spark in rush defense that the Gamecocks desperately need. Booker totaled 27 tackles last Fall, two sacks, and two forced fumbles this past season, indicating that he could thrive in a situation where he sees an expanded role.

South Carolina is competing against Ohio State, Purdue, Texas A&M, and Arkansas for Booker. Though South Carolina is geographically disadvantaged, considering where Booker grew up, the Gamecocks coaching staff has shown a resiliency in the DMV region that has landed them multiple top prospects. In addition to announcing his top five, Booker indicated in his post that he'd be committing on April 12th via his Instagram.
