South Carolina Lands Outfield Transfer From Charlotte
Mark Kingston and South Carolina's baseball team have many valuable pieces coming back for next season but have some holes they're currently trying to fill via the transfer portal. Despite losing infielder Michael Braswell to the LSU Tigers, the Gamecocks have quietly landed two transfers already in North Florida outfielder Austin Brinling and Liberty pitcher Garrett Gainey.
South Carolina's portal activity continued on Thursday evening as they landed Charlotte transfer Blake Jackson. Jackson is a player that the Gamecocks got to know pretty well this past season, as both teams met on two different occasions, with Blake getting five hits in eleven at-bats versus Carolina's pitching staff, batting in three runs combined in both contests.
As for how Jackson performed throughout the entire duration of the 49ers' season, these were his final numbers:
AVG: .277
SLG: .413
OBP: .433
HR: 5
RBI: 28
BB: 39
K: 54
Based on the stats, Jackson is by no means a guy that's going to threaten an opposing team with his power, but he seems to be a scrappy bat who doesn't go down easily at the plate, which will be a perfect fit in terms of the mentality Gamecock hitting coach Monte Lee tries to instill into his players. Blake was also apparently Charlotte's leadoff bat in 2023, which automatically fills a need for South Carolina, who, outside of Will McGillis when he was in the lineup, struggled to find a consistent bat who could threaten teams at the top of the lineup.
Combine that with the fact that he's an outfielder with a .991 fielding percentage on 106 chances from last season, and Jackson looks to be a likely starter for South Carolina in 2024.
