South Carolina's Football coaching staff has secured their second commitment in the month of June, as Fred Johnson, a 6-foot-3 linebacker from Norfolk, VA, committed to the Gamecocks over Virginia Tech, Duke, Rutgers, and Maryland on Saturday.

Fred's recruitment with the Gamecocks was a quick one; he camped with South Carolina on June 2nd, where he put up monster numbers to earn an offer. He then turned around the next week and took an official visit to South Carolina, where he committed to the staff that Monday night after the visit. He became the first recruit this summer to commit off of their official visit, the 11th commit of the class, and the second player from the DMV region, strengthening the USC-DMV pipeline South Carolina has been working on for the last three classes.

The Gamecocks are getting another great athlete on the defensive side of the ball and a kid whose recruitment process reminds me a lot of freshman All-American safety Nick Emmanwori. Although Fred has more offers at this point than Nick did, both were not well known at this point in the recruitment, but earned offers from South Carolina at a Shane Beamer Camp after putting up insane numbers. Fred ran a 4.54 40-yard dash, had a 4.20 20-yard shuttle time, and had a broad jump of 9'08" at the camp, putting up very close numbers to Nick.

The Gamecocks hope to have another Nick Emmanwori in Fred Johnson, and if so, South Carolina will be set at the linebacker position for the next several years.
