Texas AD Confirms SEC Is Working For 9-Game Schedule

Texas Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte confirmed that the SEC could expand to a nine-game conference schedule in the near future.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte made big news on Wednesday when he confirmed that the SEC may expand to a nine-game conference schedule in a few short teams. The SEC added Oklahoma and Texas this offseason amid mass conference realignment, which has favored the SEC to this point.

Currently, SEC teams play eight conference games in a season, but with the conference expanding from 14 to 16 teams, there's an opportunity to expand the schedule. Inside Texas reported the news, with quotes from Del Conte explaining the current situation and how things could move in the near future.

Nothing remains definite with conference realignment and scheduling, but this is a major sign that the SEC could be expanding sooner rather than later.

"We have eight games scheduled right now. We’re working on going to a nine-game schedule, but we have a ways to go with that. I would say this year, we have an eight-game schedule. The following year, we have another eight-game schedule. Then we’ll look at going into a nine-game conference schedule." - Texas AD Chris Del Conte
