Boo Carter Signs With Tennessee
Early national signing day is upon us, and the Tennessee Volunteers are hoping to finish strong. They've recruited at a high rate under head coach Josh Heupel and brought in some major difference-makers in their 2023 signing class. Volunteer Country will provide readers with an in-depth breakdown of each signee.
Athlete Boo Carter is the thirteenth commit to turn in their national letter of intent. He is the No. 146 player in the cycle, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Take a look at what the Vols are getting.
Prospect: Boo Carter
Projected Position: Safety, Punt Returner
Vitals: 5-10 and 184 pounds
School: Bradley Central High School (Cleveland, Tennessee)
Frame: Was a "tweener" before his senior season of high school, but has put on weight since beginning his senior season. Is physically capable of playing defensive back in the SEC. Adequate arm length to compete at the catch point with anyone on either side of the football.
Athleticism: Carter's testing numbers are eye-popping. He runs a 4.39-second forty-yard dash, a 10.7-second 100-yard dash, and a 4.35-second shuttle. Those measurables are unrivaled across the country. His short-area quickness separates him. Carter has elite hip dexterity and ankle flexion, allowing him to change directions in various manners.
Instincts: You must be a refined athlete to play as many positions as Carter. Everything looks effortless for him; he glides in and out of breaks, unzips his feet in space, and gets through progressions as a running back. Carter has natural movement from the safety position. He diagnoses, attacks, breaks down while staying in his stance if necessary, then explodes again. The connection between identifying and attacking is seamless for him.
Polish: Has a strong feel for how a play should develop, which will serve him well in college. His athletic movements are very precise; Carter breaks his feet down well in space, attacks, and gets to his top gear efficiently. He will continue learning how to play safety and what is required of that in Tennessee's system.
Bottom Line: Carter proved himself during his senior season. He won Tennessee's "Mr. Football" Award for his classification after moving up in competition level. A rare athletic marvel that could make a significant impact on the roster on special teams during his true freshman season.
