Longhorns Hire East Carolina's Nick Matson to Rodney Terry's Staff
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns have made some notable changes and hires to Rodney Terry's coaching staff this offseason, and are now set to make another.
Per reports Thursday from college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, the Longhorns are hiring East Carolina assistant coach Nick Matson to the staff. As of now, it's unclear what his role will be on the coaching staff.
The connection between he and Terry is already there, as Matson served as an assistant at both UTEP and Fresno State when "RT" was the head coach of the two programs.
Matson spent two years at East Carolina. This past season, he was an assistant under coach Michael Schwartz, who played guard for the Longhorns during the 1998-99 season before moving into a role as a graduate assistant and video coordinator under former Texas coach Rick Barnes.
Schwartz was also an assistant under Terry at Fresno State.
"Nick is a true professional and is as good a coach as there is in the country," Schwartz said, per East Carolina Athletics. "I saw firsthand how impactful he is as a coach and a person during our four years together at Fresno State. Everywhere Nick has been he has helped build successful programs.
Matson will now look to play an important role for the team this upcoming season, whether it's on the bench or behind the scenes.
