New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso recently spoke to the media, as pitchers and catchers have begun reporting to spring training.

Alonso was asked by a reporter what his overall message to Mets fans is.

"I mean, it's going to be a great year," Alonso said. "I'm really excited for it, and we've got a great group of guys. We're very, very hungry, and we want to do it. We want to climb the mountain and we want to win it. So we're really looking forward to seeing you guys at Citi Field opening week and it's going to be a really special year, so buckle up."

The Mets are coming off a 101-win season in which the club squandered a National League East division lead over the Atlanta Braves in the final weekend of the season. The Mets then lost to the San Diego Padres at home in New York in three games in the brand new, National League Wild Card Series.

The Mets have high hopes for a monumental 2023 season.

The club had a very active offseason. While the Mets parted ways with Jacob deGrom, the club re-signed Brandon Nimmo and extended Jeff McNeil and Edwin Diaz. The Mets also signed free agents Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana and Tommy Pham.

The Mets came close to signing free agent shortstop Carlos Correa, but the deal fell apart after Correa took his physical for the club. Top prospect Brett Baty will now get a chance to shine at third base.

The Mets will play their first spring training game Sat., Feb. 25. They will open the season

The Mets will open the 2023 regular season Mar. 30 in Miami against the Marlins. Then, they will travel to Milwaukee for a series with the Brewers at American Family Field, before hosting the Marlins and San Diego Padres at Citi Field.
