An update has surfaced on a surprising WWE return.

Fans have been buzzing about where big wrestling free agents will end up. We've seen some big stars such as Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Moné hit the market. While those names are reportedly likely AEW-bound, WWE recently scooped up former NJPW star Tama Tonga, if reports are to be believed, and the company is likely to snatch former STARDOM main eventer Giulia at some point.

There was one surprising name who recently made his WWE return, and a backstage update on the former free agent has been revealed.

Shawn Spears, formerly known as Tye Dillinger during his previous stints with WWE, made his shocking return to the NXT brand this past Tuesday night. He laid out Ridge Holland with a steel chair.

Fightful Select is reporting that WWE kept the surprise quiet throughout the night. It was noted that only a small group of people backstage knew that Spears would be the mystery man on last night's show. He was said to be hidden backstage before it was time for his TV spot.

Furthermore, it was reported that Spears wasn't listed in the rundown sheet when WWE NXT started airing. Instead, Spears was named "Quote Man" in the documents, and Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, Shawn Michaels, played the role of Spears during rehearsal.

Shawn Spears reportedly signed a new contract with WWE before the Vengeance Day event earlier this month.
