Fernando Alonso has issued a warning to Sergio Perez following the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Spanish driver bagged a second-place finish following Max Verstappen and ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Alonso is currently in third place in the drivers' standings with 117 points, just nine points behind Perez.

During the post-race interviews, the two-time champion was asked if he thinks he can beat Perez in the drivers' championship. Alonso simply and confidently replied, "yes", obviously feeling as though no further comment was needed.

There has been a lot of focus on Perez's performance during the 2023 season so far with the Red Bull RB19 being such a dominant car. The Mexican driver significantly closed the gap to his teammate Max Verstappen after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix leading many to believe he could put some pressure on the two-time champion for the title.

Unfortunately for Perez, he has not been able to put in the performance since then to challenge Verstappen who is now leading the championship by an incredible 69 points.

Perez's performance so far this season has fed into the rumour mill with there being a huge amount of  speculation over his future with the team. The Mexican driver is currently in contract with the Austrian team until the end of 2024, but names such as Daniel Ricciardo, Yuki Tsunoda, Lando Norris, and Alex Albon have been mentioned as possible replacements.

The team are remaining tight-lipped over Perez's future with the team but it is clear that he is there to finish second or win when Verstappen is not able to, and at the moment, he is not doing this.
