Chelsea Player Ratings: 3/10 For Ben Chilwell After Red Card In Loss To Real Madrid

Chelsea fell to a 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio scored for Real either side of a Ben Chilwell red card in the 59th minute.

A poor overall showing by Chilwell saw the left-back receive a lowly 3/10 in our Chelsea player ratings. Read on to see how we rated the rest of Chelsea's starting XI.

Chelsea Player Ratings vs Real Madrid

Kepa Arrizabalaga 8/10

Made eight saves. Without him, the result could have been a lot worse for Chelsea.

Thiago Silva 7/10

Passed a late fitness test to start. Did not look like a 38-year-old when he acrobatically cleared the ball off the Chelsea goal-line in the first half. His team's best defender by far.

Kalidou Koulibaly 5/10

Replaced by Marc Cucurella 10 minutes into the second half after appearing to pull his hamstring during a race against Rodrygo.

Wesley Fofana 4/10

Booked inside the opening five minutes for a foul on Vinicius Junior, who ran him ragged. Lucky not to cost his team a goal just before half-time when he had his pocket picked by Federico Valverde.

Reece James 6/10

Looked decent when he got forward but struggled defensively against Vinicius.

Ben Chilwell 3/10

Did nothing of note beyond the halfway line and had a worse pass completion rate than any other starting outfielder. Can have no complaints about his sending off. He will miss the second leg, but Chelsea may not miss him on this evidence.

Mateo Kovacic 5/10

A below-par performance was further evidence that Real made the right decision to let him leave in 2019.

N'Golo Kante 6/10

Playing in the Champions League for the first time since Real knocked Chelsea out last season, Kante was typically busy in midfield. He instigated multiple counter-attacks in the first half. But was also occasionally sloppy in possession.

Enzo Fernandez 7/10

Played more progressive passes than any other Chelsea player. Held his own in midfield against the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Joao Felix 6/10

Had a big chance to put Chelsea 1-0 up in the second minute but was denied by Thibaut Courtois. Responsible for two of Chelsea's three shots on target.

Raheem Sterling 5/10

Stretched Real's backline with his pace early on and came very close to equalizing immediately after Benzema's opener. But his inability to hold the ball up was one of Chelsea's main problems.
