Masters 2023 – News, Scores and Analysis from the Final Round at Augusta National
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jon Rahm rallied on Sunday to claim his first green jacket, and the first Masters win for Spain since Sergio Garcia in 2017. Rahm began the day four shots behind Brooks Koepka and cut the deficit to two at the end of their rain-delayed third round. Rahm took the lead on the 6th hole in the final round and never looked back, cruising to a four-shot win over Koepka and surprise co-runner-up Phil Mickelson.
Here’s everything you need to know from the final day at the Masters.
Rahm overcame a four-shot deficit to Koepka on Sunday and fended off a shocking late charge from 52-year-old Mickelson to win the green jacket by four shots. By closing so effectively for his second major title, Rahm proved that in a generation filled with incredible players, he just might be best of all of them.
Rahm’s post-round remarks were enjoyable. He teared up while thanking his family and Seve Ballesteros, whose birthday was Sunday. He also jokingly blamed his opening-hole four-putt on a text he received from his friend, NFL tight end Zach Ertz, moments before teeing off.
Rahm also had an old Tweet go viral in the moments after his win. Turns out it was always his destiny to win the Masters.
Phil Mickelson shot a 65 to match his career-low in the tournament, spanning 114 rounds since his first Masters in 1991. He finished a stunning T2 that no one other than Mickelson saw coming.
Brooks Koepka faded out of the lead on Sunday afternoon after dominating the first three days. Afterward he expressed frustration over the slow-playing pairing in front of him but after all he’s endured with injures, confidence issues and LIV Golf controversies, he shouldn’t feel like a loser.
Jordan Spieth made a Sunday charge at the leaders, shooting a 66 for just his second career final round in the 60s. Despite his big move, Spieth said he felt fatigued this week, which cost him shots that could’ve made a difference.
On the LIV leaderboard, 12 of the 18 LIV golfers in the field made the cut, and three cracked the top 5.
Rahm won $3.24 million, a record-breaking haul at the Masters, which continues a season of record-breaking prize money in men’s pro golf.
Early Sunday morning, Tiger Woods withdrew from the event and tweeted that he’d reaggravated his plantar fasciitis injury. Woods had made the cut on the number but was in last place midway through his third round. Saturday Woods appeared to struggle more with his injuries than ever before.
