Fore! Things
1. Sahith Theegala’s victory at the Fortinet Championship was the first of his PGA Tour career and came a month after he missed qualifying for the Tour Championship by one stroke with a late bogey at the BMW Championship. Theegala, who is eligible for all of the Signature events in 2024, had already qualified for the Masters with a ninth-place finish this year.
2. Max Homa tied for seventh at the Fortinet. The U.S. Ryder Cup player was bidding to become the first player to win a PGA Tour event in three consecutive years since Steve Stricker did it from 2009-11 at the John Deere Classic. (Stricker won the Sanford International on Sunday, his sixth PGA Tour Champions win of the year.)
3. The LIV Golf League returns this week at Rich Harvest Farms outside of Chicago, where Cam Smith is defending his first LIV Golf title. It’s been relatively quiet for LIV Golf, which hasn’t played in six weeks and did not take advantage of a few down weeks in golf to announce future plans. Still to come is the location for its first Promotions event, which is expected to be the second week of December, possibly in the United Arab Emirates. Also, the 2024 schedule has yet to be announced nor how teams will be filled via the Promotions event for the 2024 season.
4. Brooks Koepka at the LIV Golf event and Robert MacIntyre at the French Open will be the only Ryder Cup players competing this week.
Fore! More Things
1. Europe will attempt to earn a third straight victory for the first time in Solheim Cup history this week when the matches are played beginning Friday at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain. Suzann Pettersen, who earned the clinching point for Europe four years ago and then served as an assistant during Europe’s victory two years ago, is the European captain. Stacy Lewis is captain for the United States. The Solheim Cup will return to even-numbered years next year, meaning for the first time it will be contested in consecutive years.
2. All of Zach Johnson’s assistant captains will be playing in this week’s Pure Insurance Classic on the PGA Tour Champions. The event is at Pebble Beach. Steve Stricker, Fred Couples, Jim Furyk, Davis Love III and Stewart Cink will then travel together to the Ryder Cup in Rome from California on Sunday night.
3. There is no PGA Tour event this week but the DP World Tour heads to the French Open at Le Golf National, site of the 2018 Ryder Cup and also the venue for next year’s Olympic Golf Tournament. Among those in the field is European Ryder Cup team member Robert MacIntyre as well as American Billy Horschel. European assistant captain Edoardo Molinari is also in the field.
4. There are 11 days until the first session of the Ryder Cup in Italy. The start to the 2024 PGA Tour season at the Sentry begins in 108 days. And the first round of the Masters is 200 days away.
