Angels News: Perry Minasian Expects Big Things Out of Newest Trade Addition
The Angels were one of the busiest teams ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, adding Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox and CJ Cron and Randal Grichuk from the Colorado Rockies.
On deadline day, however, they weren't totally finished making moves.
Right on the cusp of the 3 p.m. deadline, the Angels made a deal with the New York Mets, adding RHP Dominic Leone to further bolster the bullpen alongside Lopez.
With all the deals flying in at that time, that move somewhat flew under the radar. However, Angels GM Perry Minasian is very excited about the team's newest and final addition (via Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register).
"It’s always tough to trade young players but felt like there was a real need in the bullpen and Leone’s been outstanding the last month," Minasian said. "His velo’s picked up. The strikeout rate was really impressive. We think his best pitching is ahead of him."
Leone had a 4.40 ERA in 30.2 innings with the Mets this season, but did have 33 strikeouts to just 11 walks. With Lopez and All-Star closer Carlos Estevez already in the bullpen, the Angels didn't need another high-leverage arm, they just needed a solid middle relief option, and Leone will provide just that.
Like Minasian said, the team expects him to be even better for the Halos the rest of this season, and that tends to happen when players go from a struggling squad to a contender making a push.
Leone may not have been the Angels' splashiest addition of the deadline, but don't be surprised if he makes one of the biggest impacts the rest of the way.
He was added to the active roster on Wednesday, so he should be set to make his Angels debut sometime in this huge four-game series against the Seattle Mariners that starts Thursday night.
