Angels News: Perry Minasian Says Payroll Isn’t a Concern This Offseason
The Los Angeles Angels have had a very impressive offseason thus far. They've filled just about all their holes, and have spent less than $100 million in the process. The team remains under the luxury tax threshold, however, earlier in the offseason, general manager Perry Minasian confirmed that the team could exceed it for the first time — and they still have a few places on the roster they're looking to upgrade.
At his first media availability last week, Minasian confirmed that payroll would not be an issue this offseason. He said the team could still exceed the luxury tax threshold this offseason.
"Yes, I do think it’s a possibility," Minasian said. "It’s something that we don’t talk about that much. Going back to the bingo card, it’s never been a mandate that we stay under. Yeah, it’s a possibility. Again, it’s got to be the right fit."
It's a little concerning to hear that exceeding the luxury tax isn't something they talk about, but at least he knows that they could spend more this offseason. He doesn't think owner Arte Moreno will have any issue doing it, despite having never done it in the past.
"Yeah, I think he’s obviously invested in this club throughout his whole ownership," Minasian said. "We’ve been a top-10 payroll for a long time. So I don’t see that changing. I don’t necessarily see, knowing the individual and knowing how much he wants to win, I wouldn’t put anything out of the realm of possibility."
The Angels have been linked to more than five free agents who still remain on the open market. So it'll be interesting to see what else Minasian has in store before Opening Day.
