Looming Questions As Guardians Drop Series To Brewers
The Cleveland Guardians lost to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon 5-4 to officially drop the weekend series. But many fans have more questions than answers leaving this series because we saw some unconventional lineups as the games progressed.
What's Up With The Outfield?
There's a lot to unpack here.
David Fry got the start in right field in game two which was shocking for a number of reasons. He's started in the outfield eight times in his minor league career and hasn't started there since 2021. Fry immediately made an error in the first inning as he misplayed a very makeable ball that ended up allowing a run to score.
To Fry's credit, he did pull in a few more fly balls and had a crucial RBI late in the game. He can be a valuable piece for Cleveland, but seeing Fry start in the outfield wasn't how many expected him to be used.
Another surprising move was Will Brennan starting in center field in the series finale, as Myles Straw was out of the lineup. Straw is a tremendous defensive player, but sooner or later the Guardians are going to need some more pop from their outfielders.
Is Brennan starting in center a sign of what's to come or was this just a one-off to give Straw some rest?
Will Tyler Freeman Get More Opportunities Soon?
Tyler Freeman continues to shine when given opportunities to play. He started at second base on Friday night and made a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch. He then got the start at third on Sunday afternoon and went 2-3 with a walk and a double.
The biggest play he made came in the series finale when Freeman went from first to third on a past ball. Brennan blooped one into right field and Freeman scored the tying run. This is the sort of smart hustle that helps win games and should be rewarded with playing time.
Freeman is still in a utility role right now, but he's proven that he's an everyday player.
