Rocky Spring Training For Zach Plesac Continues
I realize that Spring Training isn't the time to start overreacting to stats. However, as we settle into the Cactus League and Opening Day gets closer it's time to start taking them for what they are.
This goes for Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Zach Plesac who's been on a roller coaster over his first three starts of the Spring. Over that first handful of appearances, he's posted a 9.45 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP in just 6.2 innings.
His best start of the Spring came against Team Mexico where he pitched four scoreless innings and only gave up a single hit. (This start doesn't officially count towards the Spring stats due to it being an exhibition matchup.)
Plesac's other starts included 2.1 innings against the Brewers where he gave up a run and two hits and 1.2 innings against the Rangers where he gave up six hits and five runs.
Then against the Dodgers, Plesac pitched 2.2 more innings while giving up four hits and two runs in the process.
Again, the Spring isn't the time to deep dive into a player's stats. But I do think that Plesac's final starts leading into the season may be a different situation. The Guardians will be looking to pick up right where they left off come October and a lot of that has to do with how the back end of the bullpen performing.
There have been times this Spring when Plesac has shown he's ready to bounce back from a difficult 2022, but then the other starts show familiar struggles.
