Mets' Max Scherzer in Line to Return on Sunday

Mets ace Max Scherzer could make his return on Sunday against the Washington Nationals.

WASHINGTON - He's trending in the right direction.

Mets ace Max Scherzer (neck spasms) had a full work day on Friday at Nationals Park and appears to be on track to start on Sunday.

Scherzer threw a 30-pitch bullpen session and came away feeling good afterward. The 38-year-old says his neck spasms have subsided, which means he should be good to go.

Scherzer has also been dealing with a lingering back issue for a majority of the season, but says his recent time off has helped him feel better in this area.

This back ailment forced Scherzer's start to be pushed back last month. He also served a 10-game suspension for using a foreign substance.

It has been a rough go for the $130 million dollar man this season, as he has a 5.56 ERA in five starts.

Due to his neck spasms, Scherzer has not pitched in a game since May 3 when he gave up six runs to the Detroit Tigers.

If all goes well and he makes a start on Sunday, it will be a full 11 days between starts for Scherzer.

The other question that remains is how built up Scherzer will be after not pitching for nearly two weeks. But the Mets believe this won't be a concern if he can start on Sunday.
