Entering the 2023 season, the San Diego Padres were the talk of baseball. They had come off an exciting winter spending spree and were the trendy pick to represent the National League in the World Series. However, the team started the season off slowly and the sky high expectations were shot. Yet, with all the talent on the roster, the Friars have slowly started to play much better of late and are finally showing signs of being the team that everyone thought they'd be.

San Diego still trails in the NL West by a decent amount but it's the little things that they are doing, which has changed the way they play.

“What I think is, when we try to do a little bit too much, we don’t,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have the ability to, but I don’t think that’s our best mindset going in. So get on, good at-bats … taking some pitches, getting on base, putting the pressure on a starting pitcher early in the game when usually they’re most vulnerable."

Per The San Diego Union Tribune

Melvin is correct in saying that the Padres just need to settle in and let the game come to them. They have way too much talent on the roster to do anything else, even amid the struggles.

One beautiful part about baseball is that there is normally another game the following day so even if mistakes are made one night, you have a chance to correct it quickly.

San Diego has slowed things down and have been reaping the benefits. There is still a lot of season left to be played and the Padres are the National Leagues' version of a sleeping giant.
