Entering Saturday, the Padres were 8.5 games back of first place in the NL West. This wasn't where the team expected to be heading into the middle of June after the stellar offseason that the team had. However, Brandon Scott of Bleacher Report, doesn't foresee the Padres making any big time moves at the trade deadline.

"Even an active deadline would not solve the issue of underperformance from San Diego's biggest stars. But it could solve the big holes at the bottom of the lineup."

The issues that the Padres have won't be solved by bringing in more talent. Their inconsistency on offense has plagued them all season is one of the weirdly aspects of the MLB season. Having a lineup of Juan Soto, Fernado Tatis JrXander Bogaerts and Manny Machado, you would think that San Diego would be explosive on offense.

When they made the move to trade for Soto last summer, it was seen as a power move. San Diego was pushing all their chips in to try and bring the first World Series title to the franchise. But Soto hasn't fully lived up to expectations yet and the team's farm system got depleted. Additionally, they traded for closer Josh Hader last season and had to give up major assets as well.

"This is really hard to call because of all the fantasy trades you might envision for the Padres happened last year."

While the Padres haven't lived up to the pressure and expectations that were set for them this season, all is not lost. There is still plenty of time left in the year for a comeback. But they need to start consistently putting victories into the win column.

I see them as a sleeping giant, waiting to be woken up. However, playing in a division with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the upstart Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego must get things together soon.

We shall see what the Padres do come the trade deadline but they should focus on fixing the in house issues, rather than giving even more assets up.
