Texas Rangers Closer to Getting Corey Seager, Mitch Garver Back

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy provided an injury update on Corey Seager and Mitch Garver.

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy offered updates on two injured players — shortstop Corey Seager and catcher Mitch Garver — before Friday’s 5-4 loss at the Los Angeles Angles.

Seager is getting closer to going on a rehab assignment, Bochy told The Dallas Morning News.

“He’s coming along … he’s getting close, probably will leave before this trips over, to be honest, to start his rehab,” Bochy said.

The current 10-game road trip runs through May 14, with upcoming stops at the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics.

This lines up with what Bochy has said earlier this week. During the Arizona series, Bochy indicated that Seager was 7-10 days away from returning to the field.

On Thursday, Bochy told ESPN’s Baseball Tonight podcast that the team would made a decision on whether Seager would start a rehab assignment after the Angels series ended Sunday.

Bochy added that Seager wasn’t high on the idea of a rehab stint, but Friday’s update indicated that maybe that stance has changed.

As for Garver, Bochy put a tentative date on the veteran’s return “around May 23.”

Returning on the date would make him available for the Rangers’ other major road trip this month — a nine-game trip to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers that starts May 22.

Garver took batting practice on Friday before series opener with the Angels.

Garver went on the injured list on April 10 after suffering a mid-left knee sprain. At the time, the hope was that Garver would be available after his 10-day stint on the injured list. But his recovery has taken longer than expected.

Seager has been out of the lineup since April 12 due to a strained hamstring. Seager suffered a hamstring injury once with the Los Angeles Dodgers and needed about a month to recover.

Seager has ramped up baseball activities lately, including light throwing and swinging a bat. Bochy said his ability to run would be the major factor in returning.

The Rangers (18-13) look to tie the Angels series in Saturday’s 8:07 p.m. start. Nathan Eovaldi (3-2, 3.93) goes for Texas, while Reid Detmers (0-2, 4.85) is on the mound for the Los Angeles (19-14).
