New York Yankees 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Brock Selvidge
InsideThePinstripes.com will review each of the New York Yankees’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.
No. 13: LHP Brock Selvidge, Hudson Valley Renegades (High-A), Tampa Tarpons (Class-A)
Statistics for 2023: (24 games, 23 starts): 8-5, 3.45 ERA, 127.2 innings, 116 hits, 56 runs (49 earned), five home runs, 35 walks, 137 strikeouts, .234 opponent batting average, 1.18 WHIP.
Season Transactions: Selvidge started the season with the Tampa Tarpons. On July 18 the Yankees promoted him to Hudson Valley.
Season Summary: This was the first full minor-league season for Selvidge and he was impressive, with a winning record, a solid ERA and a high strikeout rate. He doubled his walks allowed from 2022, but the fact that he threw 80 more innings than 2022 makes the fact that he only doubled it makes that impressive. Control seems to be his thing, and that’s something the Yankees could use long term.
Path Through the Organization: Selvidge is one of the success stories of the new MLB Draft Combine. When he came through the combine in 2021, he was coming off a below-average senior season of high school. But his performance at the combine reminded scouts why they were interested in him and the Yankees picked him in the third round and gave him a $1.5 million bonus to pass up college. He had to repeat rookie ball in 2022 because the same issues he experienced in high school came up again, but he’s bounced back since then.
What’s next: He’s moving quickly for a player out of high school. According to MLB.com scouts, going back to his older mechanics as a high school player has resulted in a quality fastball, slider and cutter. He’s also working to add a change-up. That’s the make-up of a starting pitcher at the MLB level. He could start 2024 at Hudson Valley again, and consistency — which is the only thing he has lacked so far as a pro — could earn him a promotion to Double-A Somerset.
