The San Antonio Spurs have a decision looming regarding the future of small forward Romeo Langford.

Langford, 23, averaged a career-best 6.9 points per game in 43 appearances with the Spurs last season. However, he struggled in some areas.

That being said, The Athletic still ranked Langford as the 16th-best small forward entering free agency this summer.

"Langford’s year in San Antonio went better than his time in Boston in some respects, as he showed more capability as a finisher and showed some promise at the defensive end despite being an undersized wing," The Athletic writes. "Unfortunately, his 3-point shot evaded him (26.2 percent), dropping him to 28.8 percent career. If he can’t shoot from distance at 6-4, there probably isn’t enough else there to build on. That said, he’s young enough to still turn the corner as a shooter."

The Spurs present a really good fit for Langford because he is young and can develop while still playing in the NBA. However, there are other younger players with more promising futures than him, and his price tag compared to those players is larger.

"The Spurs can make Langford a restricted free agent by submitting a $7.7 million qualifying offer, but that would seem excessive for a guy who is probably looking at a minimum deal. (He is no longer two-way-eligible). The Spurs also have a crowded roster, so his next chance may come someplace else," The Athletic writes.

The conundrum Langford presents is that he exudes a lot of potential, but even after just a year in San Antonio and four seasons under his belt, it appears that time has passed him by if the Spurs and other teams favor players with a little more youth and upside.
