Darrin Simmons Excited to Work With Jordan Battle: 'He’s Very Well-Rounded'

Cincinnati selected Battle in the third round of this past weekend's draft.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — New Bengals safety Jordan Battle could start quickly for Cincinnati, but he should impact special teams for Darrin Simmons's unit immediately.

Battle wowed Simmons in his combine interview back in February, on top of playing at a high level for Alabama. The long-time Bengals special teams coordinator discussed his ideal role for the third-round pick.

“There are a couple of guys when I sit in all these interviews at the combine — and especially with all the skill position players — (where) you come out of there when you get done talking with those guys, with a feeling (where) you’re like, ‘Man, if there’s any way we can get that guy on our team, we want that guy on our team.’ Just from a 15-minute conversation. And that (Battle) was one of the guys I put a big red star on — ‘We want this guy on our team.’ He’s very well-rounded, he’s very instinctive, and he understands the game. You can tell he’s been, obviously, very well-coached. He’s been a part of a great program at Alabama, and he’s had to play a lot of special teams. He’s been productive, he’s got a lot of tackles in his career, and he’ll have a huge role for us here.”

According to PFF, Battle's played 358 career kickoff return snaps at Alabama and 90 punt return snaps.

He has season-long special teams grades of 64.7, 74.7, 68.3, and 65.1 with 14 career tackles and 6 assisted tackles.
