Joe Burrow on Potential Contract Extension With Bengals: 'I'm Pretty Clear on What I Want'

Burrow and the Bengals are hoping to agree on a long-term extension before the start of the 2023 season.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is hoping to agree to a long-term extension with the team this offseason and he's directly involved in the negotiations.

"I'm involved. That's in the works," Burrow said on Tuesday. "That's not really something that I like to play out in the media. Just the way I think they want to do business, I want to do business, we prefer to keep that between us."

Burrow was asked if he consulted other top quarterbacks that have signed big money contracts with their respective teams. He's good friends with Josh Allen, who signed a 6-year, $258 million contract with the Bills.

The 26-year-old sounds like he knows what he wants and doesn't plan on asking Allen or any other signal-caller in the NFL for advice.

"I'm pretty clear on what I want in the contract and what I think is best for myself and the team," Burrow said. "We're on the road to making that happen."

He sounded optimistic about getting an extension done this offseason. He's also aware of other guys on the team that are in line to get paid.

Wide receiver Tee Higgins is eligible for an extension this offseason and is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Ja'Marr Chase will be eligible to sign an extension next offseason.

"Whenever you have guys on the team that need to be paid, that's always on your mind," Burrow said. "You want that to be a focal point and so we're working to make that happen."

It's unclear if Burrow would be willing to take a "hometown discount," but he certainly sounds open to the idea if structuring his next contract in team-friendly way that could help the Bengals put the best team around him in 2023 and beyond.
