La'el Collins on Jonah Williams Trade Request: 'Jonah’s Going To Be Fine'
CINCINNATI — The Bengals are hoping to get La'el Collins back as fast as possible from torn ligaments in his knee suffered last season.
He made his first offseason comments to the media on Monday and detailed how he feels for Jonah Williams amidst a position change.
Collins is eager to see how he, Williams, and all of the right tackle candidates look when the pads get smacking.
"We all know that that’s a part of the business," Collins said about Williams getting his role changed. "Unfortunately, everybody’s going to have to go through the business part at some point. It’s not going to probably be what they want or whatever the case may be. But, at the same time, Jonah’s going to be fine. He’s a hell of an NFL player. He’s a first-round pick. He’s done it. I got all the confidence in the world in Jonah with the type of person he is. It’s like every one of these guys in here. To me, man, all it is is we’re going to be better and we’re going to have depth and we’re going to be deep and we’re coming and we ain’t stopping."
Williams requested a trade from the Bengals once they officially signed Orlando Brown Jr. to play left tackle.
Collins noted his health is ahead of schedule during the media session. If he keeps on that track, Cincinnati could have four viable competitors for the role in Collins, Williams, Cody Ford, and a rookie.
Collins was a good run blocker last season (73.5 PFF grade), but struggled in pass protection (44.2 PFF grade) as he dealt with a nagging back injury.
