Tyler Boyd Discusses Practice Without Joe Burrow: 'When The Pressure Comes In'
CINCINNATI — The Bengals receivers have missed Joe Burrow for basically all of training camp, but Tyler Boyd knows it's just an even bigger reason to stay focused on making the plays that do come to the pass catchers.
The slot weapon discussed Burrow-less practices with All Bengals' Elise Jesse.
"I try to keep our unit kind of strong and relaxed as possible because, without nine, I think that's when the pressure comes in," Boyd said. "We all want to go out there like man look, we might not get too many opportunities or they might not be on point as of now as it is when we do get the ball, we got to go get this, gotta go do this, we gotta go make a play out of nothing."
Burrow has been gone with the calf strain since July 27 and did not travel with the team to Atlanta for Friday's preseason game. Boyd is unlikely to get many chances to make plays this preseason, but younger guys like Andrei Iosivas and Charlie Jones will play a key role in the backup quarterback battle.
"I tried to do a good job with myself and not really trying to overdo it and keep them sane (the receivers) to just go out there and play the game," Boyd continued. "Because at the end of the day, the quarterback position is taught the same as they teach Joe Burrow. They're (the backups) gonna know the checks and calls and get us into places we can be successful. But at the end of the day, we gotta play football and we're going to have to be the guys because we are the engine of the offense, and without us the car ain't gonna go."
Whoever makes that dup pop between Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning could end up proving themselves as Cincinnati's backup quarterback.
Regardless, neither player can afford to post passer ratings hovering around 50 as they both did against Green Bay. If so, it might be time to call in some outside help for this backup race.
