CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow might not be the highest paid player in the NFL, but that's expected to change in the near future.

Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension with the Chargers, but ESPN's Adam Schefter believes Burrow's new deal will surpass it and make him the highest paid player in the league.

"They will produce what then will be the highest paying average annual salary contract in NFL history," Schefter said on NFL Live. "Joe Burrow's expected to become the highest paid player in NFL history at some point this summer. We just don't know exactly when. But that deal will beat Jalen Hurts' deal. That deal will beat Lamar Jackson's deal. That deal will beat Justin Herbert's deal.

"Joe Burrow is going to be a very wealthy man. They now have a starting point at which to go and I can promise you the numbers are going to be well north of the numbers that came in on Justin Herbert."

Burrow and the Bengals have kept their contract negotiations quiet, but they're expected to strike a deal before the start of the season.
